Winter Magic: The Ultimate Bucket List to Fight the Winter Woes

Let me tell you, winter is a time. It's a party going from October through December. You have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all the festivities associated with their respective holidays. Costume contests, trick or treating, fall festivals, Thanksgiving dinner, and then, of course, the big one, CHRISTMAS; family and friends surround you, and no matter who you are, you are busy and unbelievably consistently active. It's worth it, though; you're making memories, right?

Then January hits right on time in the centre of darkness. It's gloomy, and there are more days of grey than there are ones where you see the sun, not to mention it's pretty dark out most of the day. Having your mood match the weather appears automatic. Most days, I need to be more inspired and motivated. Why should I want to do anything when the outside just seems dead?

That mentality gets you nowhere, and you gotta shake it off! I say it often: life is about perspective. It's having a vision for what you want and creating a vision around it to keep yourself moving. For me, the planner that I am means creating a magical winter bucket list. It's a simple activity a week to get me from January 1st to mid-March when it's finally spring. The key to overcoming the darkness? Have something to look forward to.

So What’s on My List?

1: Plan and go on a little low-key getaway or day trip

I'm 100% for starting off the year with a bang. Power of positive thinking and following it up with a powerful action kind of person over here. Starting off with going is setting the tone for saying hey, I'm conquering this cold and doing it with a smile. In fact, I'm having fun! It doesn't have to be something big and bold, but a fantastic, cozy place to hang out is perfect for the season. Plus, who doesn't look forward to a change of scenery?

2: Go ice skating

Here in Michigan, Winter is synonymous with ice. Instead of being stressed about the ice, why not embrace it and play on it by visiting an ice skating rink? Whether you're a pro or a beginner, ice skating is a fun and invigorating activity that can be found in so many places! Plus, it really is fantastic exercise.

3: Take a winter hike

Hiking is an activity that costs nothing and is fun every season. Trust me when I say there is nothing like tromping through the snow in snow pants in the middle of the woods. A quiet, unlike quiet, makes you want to keep exploring to see what nature has in store for you to see. The crisp air and snow-covered landscapes are sure to take your breath away. Bundle up if you're in colder climates like me, and get out there in the fresh air.

4: Read by the fire.

Being blessed enough to live in a home with a fireplace is one of life's simple pleasures. Add in a new book with a side of something warm to drink, and it's heaven. Just a cozy reminder of warmth that humbly overtakes your body. I like to make an event of it with pillows in front of the fireplace and blankets to curl up in, a whole little snuggle fest. It's worth it every time. No real fireplace to snuggle in front of? Check out YouTube! There are a BUNCH Of fireplace crackling videos you can put on in the background. Pair it with a heated blanket, and it's still a vibe.

5: Explore coffee shop culture.

I'm going to date myself, ok. K. Remember when Starbucks became a thing, and everyone talked about the new coffee shop's cultural revolution? Seriously, it's the best. Winter is the perfect time to indulge in a warm coffee or tea. Instead of your local Starbies, though, try out something new. Make it a goal to try out a new coffee shop in your area, support small and hang out there awhile, read, work, journal, doodle, whatever, just get lost in the ambience it provides you with. I do some of my best thinking and reconnecting with myself over a delicious cup of joe.

6: Bake up a storm or make a pot of soup

Who doesn't want comfort food all winter long? There is something about carbs and warm liquid heating you up from the inside out that does it for me. Spend an afternoon in the kitchen whipping up cookies, cakes, soups, and pies to share with family and friends. They'll appreciate it, and your belly will, too.

7: Have a candlelit evening

Set the mood for romance with an evening of candlelight. No overhead lighting all night, just lamps and candles. Something about its ambience makes you feel at ease, with peace washing over you. Everything moves slightly slower, and isn't that slower pace precisely what we need at times?

8: Explore a museum or head to the library

Enjoy the colder weather and spend an afternoon exploring a local museum, or check out your local library. You're sure to learn something new and stay warm in the process. Plus, they know people are looking for a way out of the house and hibernation, so usually, there are a TON of free activities at your local library or smaller museums, and yes, I mean for adults!

9: Refresh your cozy collection

Sometimes, you need to be equipped for the weather going forward. Invest! Go on a little shopping trip for warm fuzzy socks, a new blanket, a mug, slippers, PJs, and the cozy wardrobe essentials. It just feels good, like you're inviting yourself to the warmth!

10: Have a movie and waffle night

Company is so much fun, especially when you all feel the cold weather blues. Host a movie and waffles night! You provide the batter and the waffle maker, then invite everyone to bring a topping for the waffles in a small bowl: chocolate chips, marshmallows, caramel, syrup, berries, nuts, you name it. Then, pick a movie to watch while you enjoy each other's company and your personal waffle creation. Inexpensive and so much fun!

11: Game Time

Speaking of company, you could also have a game night. I'm a big fan of strategy games like Catan, Ticket to Ride, Villianous, etc. It takes time to play but also helps the day speed by. Just you? Play something cozy and fun like Dreamlight Valley or Sims online or on your favourite gaming system. Games are not your thing? What about a jigsaw puzzle or Diamond Art? These are all excellent choices for a fun, long-winded activity to let the day pass while having a good time.

In conclusion, winter doesn't have to be a time of hibernation. By creating your own winter bucket list or using my guidance and setting achievable goals, you can make the most of the season and enjoy all its festive activities.

Happy Winter.
